Who are Chorus Angelorum?

The Chorus Angelorum Choral Ensemble is comprised of several of the area's best amateur and professional vocalists. The ensemble was formed in early 2020 with the intent of safely providing online choral concerts, both sacred and secular, during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Even as things begin to return to normal, Chorus Angelorum continues to fill a role in the Chattanooga Arts community, through both virtual and live performances.

Music of the New World

Join Chorus Angelorum as we take a trip through time, exploring and saluting the growth of American choral music from the founding of the colonies to today.

Choral music in this country has taken many forms over its centuries of existence, and has changed and expanded as the country has. In this concert, we will trace the history of American choral music using its two most basic perspectives:

1) Music with a functional purpose

2) Music with an artistic purpose

The early pioneers who came to this country brought with them two types of music - religious and folk. Both played major roles in society, but the functional need for church music gave choral works a foundation for development. By the 20th century, there was an explosion of interest and growth in choral music unprecedented in the history of the country. The church, previously the driving force behind choral music, became much less influential, and secular choral music took a vital role. The confluence of the two main forces will continue to be a major factor in the development of choral music through the 21st century.
