Harvest Harmony Fundraiser

Chorus Angelorum hosted their first annual fundraiser event in October of 2023. Attendees enjoyed a relaxing afternoon of eating and drinking accompanied by performances from members of Chorus Angelorum, bid on exciting items in a silent auction, and celebrated the start of our fourth season!

Lessons and Carols

The nine lessons and carols told as a part of this service walk through the Christmas story from Earth's creation to the arrival of the Magi to witness the birth of Jesus Christ in the manger. The scriptural readings are interspersed with choral presentations and hymns, all of which recall mankind's longing for liberation from sin and death, and our hope and expectation for the birth of Christ.

The 2023 service featured the festive sound of brass accompanying traditional carols, reimagined anthems, and well-loved hymns for choir and congregation.​

Although ever-present, it can be easy to miss the use of human voice in cinematic scores. It is often used in a supporting role in the background creating ambiance or ethereal sound. But when the human voice is allowed to shine, whether as a single voice or an ensemble, it can truly transport you into the world of the film; when the choral sound takes center stage, its collective voice becomes the storyteller in its own right. Human voices, stripped of orchestral amalgamation, carry a raw and unfiltered emotional weight that can imbue a cinematic narrative with a sense of depth. Films and videogames of all genres make use of the flexibility in choral sound to not only dictate emotions but to create the feeling of the world they want you to enter.

Choir and Organ

Performed in conjunction with the Chattanooga chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
​
This one of a kind concert featured works for choir, organ, and both together, culminating in a grand performance of the Messe Solennelle by Louis Vierne for two organs and choir.
​
In addition to the mass, this concert premiered two works by our own Ethan McGrath. Other composers included were Balfour Gardiner, Gabriel Faure, Randall Thompson, John Tavener, and Robert Lucas Pearsall.

Each choral carol and congregational hymn is meant to accentuate the stories told through these lessons, and to inspire joy and wonderment in the miracle of the Christmas story.

The 2022 service centered on Christmas from the female perspective, and featured music by female composers, arrangers, and lyricists.

Music of the New World

This concert took us on a trip through time, exploring and saluting the growth of American choral music from the founding of the colonies to today. It featured works from early folk songs, to battle hymns, and even Broadway musicals. We explored the influence of choral music, both sacred and secular, over its many years of existence in this country, and celebrated the diversity of genres that we have developed. ​
A Service of Tenebrae

Chorus Angelorum was honored to present this powerful and moving service in conjunction with Christ Church Episcopal. For the 2023 service, the ensemble offered a combination of ancient chants, modern motets, and timeless hymns - including works by Aaron Copland, Scott Perkins, Christopher Harris, and Peter Hallock - to reflect on the themes of suffering, sacrifice, and redemption.​

Choral Favorites was a one-of-a-kind concert featuring a carefully curated selection of classic and contemporary masterpieces, beloved works, and lesser-known gems specially chosen by the talented members of Chorus Angelorum as their favorite works to not only hear, but also to perform.

The program celebrated the magnificent diversity of choral music through works that showcase a large range of styles and genres, featuring renowned composers such as Kim Andre Arnesen, Franz Biebl, Anton Dvorak, Daniel Gawthrop, Ralph Manuel, Felix Mendelssohn, Alice Parker, and more!

Celebrating the Choral Music of Black Composers

This concert celebrated the choral music of black composers, featuring works by Rosephanye Powell, Nathaniel Dett, Undine Smith Moore, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Mitchell Southall, Marques Garrett, and Keith Hampton.
The event included a pre-concert chat at 6:00pm in Fox Hall, led by Neshawn Calloway, where we discussed the historical and cultural relevance of Choral Music by Black Composers, as well as how musicians can best communicate that story through performance.
An Office of Tenebrae

The name Tenebrae (the Latin word for darkness or shadows) has traditionally been given to the ancient monastic night and early morning services (Matins and Lauds) of the last three days of Holy Week, which in medieval times came to be celebrated on the preceding evenings.

An Office of Tenebrae

In the Episcopal Church, the three major services of the Sacred Triduum, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Vigil, are celebrated around sunset, noon, and midnight respectively. The Office of Tenebrae is celebrated as a preparatory service on the evening before these three days. The office is structured around the chanting of psalms, readings, and responsories.
